Former Lord Mayor to present cheques to city charities
Three charities will be presented with cheques worth over £10,000 from funds raised by the former Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent.
Former Lord Mayor, Denver Tolley, will present the money to representatives from North Staffs ARCH, North Staffs Special Olympics and the Beatrice Canal Boat.
A cheque for £8,000 will be presented to North Staffs ARCH and two cheques for £2,000 will be presented to the North Staffs Special Olympics and the Beatrice Canal Boat.
North Staffs ARCH work with people who are in housing need, families in need of support, victims and perpetrators of domestic violence and people seeking to return to education, training and employment. Additionally North Staffs Special Olympics are part of the West Midlands Group, which forms one of the largest Special Olympic Groups in Great Britain while the Beatrice Canal Boat aims is to give children with a variety of special needs the experience of a day out on the Caldon Canal.
Former Lord Mayor, Mr Denver Tolley, said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my year as Lord Mayor as I got to raise some much needed money for these three fantastic charities. This city and its people will always be close to my heart and I hope that this money can go a long way to improving the lives of some of our city's most vulnerable and in need."
Money was raised over the year from events including the Lord Mayor's Ball, sponsored ghost hunt at Hanley Town Hall, Lady Mayoress' Soiree, Blood Brothers Theatre Trip, prize draws and dress down days as well as from various donations received throughout the year.
Denver stood down as Lord Mayor at a meeting of the council on May 26, 2011 following a year in office. Presentations will take place in the Lord Mayor's Parlour on Monday July 11 at 12pm.
