Stoke on Trent on Top of the World
Last week two intrepid explorers from Stoke on Trent confirmed that Stoke on Trent ranks on top of the world by nailing the Cities badge on the post at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa's Highest mountain) and by being photographed holding a Dudson 'Made in Stoke on Trent' Mug.
Signal breakfast DJ Perry Spiller, Jim Huyton from SSE Contracting, Arch CEO Paul Bridges and guide Will Ceasar from MSL Mountaineering formed Team Arch and set out to conquer Kili (Africa's highest mountain) on 7 August. All in aid of raising vital funds for local homeless and domestic violence charity Arch North Staffs.
The team followed the Marangu Route (known locally as the coca cola/tourist route). Altitude sickness and severe hallucinations meant that one of the team was disappointed to be stopped in their tracks with only 200 metres to go.
However, the two remaining members of the team though exhausted and feeling the full effects of altitude sickness, reached the Uhuru Peak standing at 5895m on 12 August.
The trek raised vital funds for Arch to continue working with over 2500 people each year through providing advice, support and accommodation to people in North Staffs to ensure they have a chance to reach their full potential and to live independently and safely in their own home.
Arch Chief Executive, Paul Bridges said "the trek up Kili was nothing in relation to some of the mountains Arch clients have to climb on a daily basis".
